Take a Break from the Books — With More Books and a Coffee
For students overwhelmed with assignments and deadlines, sometimes the best break from the books… is more books, just the fun kind.
At Two Story Books & Coffeehouse, barista Trevor Wright says the atmosphere is intentionally slower than most coffee spots in town. In Statesboro, Two Story fills a unique role. As the city’s only used bookstore, it offers affordable access to literature and a space for thoughtful connection.
“It’s probably the most relaxed and slow-paced café,” Wright said. “It’s definitely better for reading a book or having a really in-depth conversation with a friend.”
Wright has worked at the bookstore café for a little over a year and a half and has watched customers settle into the rhythm of the space. Unlike louder cafés where tables sit close together, Two Story offers separate rooms that create a sense of privacy.
“You’re in a whole different room,” Wright explained. “You kind of have your own conversation. That makes a difference. No one’s right on top of you.”
As Statesboro’s only used bookstore, Two Story provides something unique to the community.
“If you really want to explore something with your mind, this is probably the cheapest place to find a good book recommendation and have a good conversation with a friend,” Wright said.
When asked what book he would recommend to someone who hasn’t read in a while, Wright pointed to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.
Wright said the novel’s unique structure, including chapters numbered only in prime numbers, makes it especially engaging.
“It’s an easy start,” he said. “The language is simple, and the story is told from the perspective of an autistic boy who’s trying to solve the mystery of a dead dog.”
He adds, “It is one of the books I feel like if someone thinks books are boring, it really blows your mind at what’s possible”.
Beyond books and coffee, the café has also become a backdrop for meaningful moments. Just before Christmas, Wright witnessed one of his most memorable experiences on the job.
“A couple got engaged here,” he said. “They asked us ahead of time, and we made sure no one interrupted. Not every day at work you get to be part of a proposal.”
If there’s one drink Wright recommends to pair with your reading break, it’s the chai.
“It has a little caffeine, so it’s good for mornings, and for a late afternoon drink,” he said. “It’s refreshing iced in the summer and really comforting hot in the winter.”
At its core, Two Story Books & Coffeehouse offers something simple but rare: a place to slow down, fall into deep conversations with friends, and disconnect from the busy campus energy for a second. Take care of your mind and body!
Whether you’re trading textbooks for fiction or just looking for a quieter corner in Statesboro, sometimes the best reset is a different kind of page and a warm cup in your hands.
Upstairs, the café even offers an Airbnb stay, complete with Murphy beds that fold into the wall and transform the space for guests!
