Man arrested on murder and robbery charges in The George Apartments case

STATESBORO — The Statesboro Police Department arrested a man Monday on murder charges following the fatal shooting of another man.

Patrol officers responded to a report of shots fired around noon Friday at a parking lot at The George Apartments and found 49-year-old Kenneth Emanuel Smith shot, according to SPD.

Smith was taken to Memorial Hospital in Savannah and later died there of his injuries, according to SPD.

Detectives carried out a search warrant Monday at an apartment at The Hamptons Apartments, according to SPD. Following an investigation, officers arrested Wanya Malik Anthony, a 24-year-old man from Decatur.

Anthony is being charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery, felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to SPD. Anthony also has several drug and weapons charges pending against him based on what detectives found with the search warrant.

The pending charges include possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of schedule II controlled substance with intent to distribute (Adderall), possession of schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone), possession of schedule II controlled substance (Hydromorphone), possession of schedule II controlled substance (MDMA), possession of schedule IV controlled substance (Alprazolam) and two additional counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to SPD.

Anthony will be taken to Bulloch County Jail on Wednesday to await further judicial action.
