Why Tech will get wrecked

Trevor Mcnaboe

Man, oh man, what a game Georgia Southern played last week. The offense clicked to a tune of over 600 yards, the defense consistently got pressure and in a perfect world, it wouldn’t have been against Savannah State.

Last week’s game was a small taste of how potent and deadly Willie Fritz’s new spread system can be.

This week, however, will be a test of how conditioned and disciplined the defense can be as they take on the triple option.

Going into this game, Georgia Southern is considered around a three-touchdown underdog against Tech. Despite the odds, I’m going to stick to my preseason prediction of The Eagles coming out with a big road win for these reasons:

1. Georgia Southern’s former coach Jeff Monken was Paul Johnson’s assistant coach at here at Georgia Southern, Navy and Georgia Tech before taking the reigns here at GSU.

A majority of these players on defense know the intricacies and nuisances that come with the triple option and that can only prove beneficial for the road Eagles.

2. Georgia Tech lost more than 10 players last year- not to graduation or the NFL, but to suspension, being kicked off the team or transferring. The most notable players from the exodus of Atlanta being quarterback Tevin Washington and defensive lineman Jabari Hunt-Days.

3. And the third option (no pun intended) as to why the Eagles will win: Georgia Southern will spread the field out with veteran receivers Zach Walker and Kentrellis Showers. This will allow quarterback Kevin Ellison and running back Matt Breida to exploit the running lanes.

Many of these players view this as a big game because a lot of the players competed together in high school. Even though this isn’t an agreed-upon rivalry game, a win against an in-state opponent never hurts.
