Arabic Club to host belly dancing workshop
April 9, 2014
Students, get your hips that don’t lie ready for the Arabic Club’s first ever belly dancing workshop.
Monday, in the Russell Union ballroom at 4 p.m., students can learn a style of dance that originated in Arabic culture and became a widespread trend in the United States — Belly dancing.
“It is very popular. People love belly dancing, and it is a good way to promote Arabic culture,” Asmaa Mansour, foreign language teaching assistant, said.
Celebrities such as Shakira and Beyoncéhave helped bring this type of dancing to the mainstream. Belly dancing workout videos and classes are usually available for a small fee, but Georgia Southern University students will be taught the basics for free.
“Many people do not know much about the Arabic culture. Our goal is to promote the language and culture and clear up any misperceptions,” Mansour said.
Both men and women are welcome to the event, and the club will provide scarves for participants to tie around their waists. The Arabic Club hosts a variety of events for those interested in learning more about another culture’s traditions and lifestyle.
Mansour said, “We have an Arabic coffee hour every Wednesday and a newsletter given out every month. We also have movie nights and [host] the International Poetry Night on the tenth of April at 6 p.m.”
