Campbell out-shoots the Eagles
December 31, 2013
Despite four players scoring in double-digits for Georgia Southern University, the Fighting Camels of Campbell University held on to win 69-63 today in Buies Creek, N.C.
The five starters for Georgia Southern accounted for all but four of the team’s points.
GSU flew out of the gate and was up 11-2 but failed to hold on as Campbell drilled three three-pointers in less than two minutes. CU’s shot a mediocre 31 percent from beyond the arc, but compared to GSU’s 22 percent – the long ball proved to be the difference maker.
CU took a 23-22 lead with 2:54 remaining in the first half over the Eagles and never looked back.
24 of the Fighting Camels 69 points came from downtown. The Eagles shot only 4-18 from that mark, well below their season average of 35 percent.
Junior guard Tre Bussey led all scorers with 18 points, junior guard Jelani Hewitt finished with 13 points, senior forward Marvin Baynham and senior guard Brian Holmes both added 11.
GSU fell to 7-8 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday Jan. 4 at home against Samford University for the first Southern Conference game of the year.
