Strong individual play by senior golfer Will Evans was not enough to keep the Georgia Southern University men’s golf team from finishing fourth in the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.

Despite finishing round one in second place, the Eagles found themselves in fourth place at the end of the tournament.  Will Evans proved his status as a golfer after shooting a 2-under-par 69 in the final round and securing a tied second place spot. This is the senior golfer’s best career score and his third top-10 finish at GSU.

“The team played solid in the first round and we had some good play out of a lot of different players,” head coach Larry Mays said of the tournament. “Our ball striking was fairly good for the first tournament.”

The Eagles fell to Houston, who posted a tournament record with an 847, Michigan State (+10), and Yale (+15) to finish in fourth place.

“Yesterday’s play wasn’t quite up to where we would have liked it to have been. We didn’t seem to play with a sense of urgency,” Mays said. “We’ve got to clean up a little bit if we want to compete to win some trophies.”

Senior Christian Humber finished in 12^th place with a 74 in the final round, including a birdie on his first hole of the day.  This is the golfer’s best finish at GSU.

Junior Kim Koivu shot three straight rounds of 72 and finished 16^th.  He was 2-under-par going into the back nine of the final round thanks to birdies on two of his first three holes.

Junior Charlie Martin finished with a score of 77 to land in a tie for 24^th while struggling junior Scott Wolfes held his ground with two birdies on the last 4 holes for a 76. Sophomore Henry Mabbett also finished with a score of 76.

“It was a good first tournament and we played on a very challenging golf course,” Mays said. “(This tournament) was a good starting point for the year and it kind of measures where we are coming out of summer break and going into the rest of the season.”
