James Johnson brought home two titles last night at the annual scholarship pageant, Mr. Georgia Southern University 2013.
Johnson, a junior business management major, competed against five contestants for the Mr. GSU title and the “People’s Choice Award.”
“It wasn’t hard to choose a winner because you’re not comparing, the pageant committee gives you great judging sheets. So you really know what you’re looking for,” said judge and Mr. GSU 2011, Justin Jeffrey.
Johnson received a $500 scholarship provided by the University Programming Board, will attend spirit events on campus with Ms. GSU and is required to complete two community service events each month.
“With my title I want to get as many students involved on campus as possible. I also really want to work with the Student Government Association and Keep Bulloch Beautiful,” said Johnson
Johnson won over the audience and judges with his heartfelt and original poem during the talent show entitled “Fathers.” He was inspired to write it after hearing about the shooting of a mother and her baby.
The poem was Johnson’s first poetry reading that was not school related.
“My favorite portion was the talent show, I really enjoyed seeing all the contestants unique talents,” said Megan Fannon, a senior sports management major.
Students cast their votes for “People’s Choice” by donating any amount of money they wanted into buckets with contestants name and picture on them. Johnson had the most donations and all the proceeds collected will go the American Cancer Society.
“I definitely did not think I was going to win. The competition was fierce, all the contestants put in a lot of hard work,” said Johnson.
