In the last game of the Hatter Classic in Deland, Fl., the Georgia Southern University women’s basketball team was outlasted by Bethune-Cookman University by a score of 59-48.

The contest on Wednesday afternoon was neck and neck until the eight minute mark in the second half. The Wildcats of B-CU took the lead 40-39 and never looked back. This loss was GSU’s second of the tournament and dropped the Eagles to a 1-7 record for the year.

The team is stuck in a rut right now brought on by a lack of consistency. Some nights the Eagles will put up good offensive stats but then will have an off night rebounding and turn the ball over too much. Other nights when the turnover total is low, the buckets are hard to find. A complete game has yet to be had from Head Coach Chris Vozab’s squad.

Freshman guard Alexis Sams and junior guard Mimi Dubose led the way in scoring with ten points apiece. Dubose finished with seven rebounds.

Senior guard Meredyth Frye chipped in nine points. Frye is a player who led the Eagles in scoring last season with 10.4 points per game. Thus far this year, she averages 5.5 points per game. Frye is expected to be a major contributor for GSU and her play must improve if the Eagles want to have a chance to make it back to a .500 record.

The next opportunity for GSU comes on Friday against Kennesaw State University. The Owls will come into the contest with a 3-7 record, so this game can either help boost the Eagles’ confidence or devastate it. Either way, a consistent, complete game is needed if the squad wishes to get its second win on the year.
