No offensive firepower was to be seen from the Georgia Southern University women’s basketball team as it fell to Stetson University, 70-39, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles played its first of two games in the Hatter Classic against the host of the tournament, the Stetson Hatters. In the team’s first game since Dec. 7, it shot only 31.8 percent from the floor.

A combination of poor shot selection and no one stepping up besides junior guard Mimi Dubose and sophomore guard Anna Claire Knight for GSU is responsible for the low point total. This seems to be a continued theme for the Eagles who dropped to 1-6 on the season.

Dubose finished the game with 12 points on 50 percent field goal shooting. She averages almost 15 points per game and is continually the fallback option for the offense. Her, and Knight who finished with 10 points, are the only players who consistently score for the Eagles. The other three starters for GSU only average 15.5 points per game combined.

Stetson’s guard Jama Sharp led the Hatters with 16 points followed by guard Victoria McGowan with 15, Ashley Dennis with 12 and Cherisse Burris with 11.

Apart from the poor offensive numbers, the Eagles also got out-rebounded 38-26. A +12 rebound differential gave the Hatters even more ammunition that allowed the team to pull away from the Eagles from the get go.

GSU finishes play in the Hatter Classic tomorrow at 3 p.m. against the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University. In order to come out of the tournament with a win, players besides Dubose and Knight will need to put points on the board.
