Eagles fall to The Citadel at home
October 6, 2012
The Georgia Southern University women’s soccer team fell to the Citadel Bulldogs 2-4 today at Eagle Field.
Senior forward Courtney Collins got the scoring started on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute. The lead was short lived as Bulldogs junior forward/midfielder Mariana Garcia used her left foot to score from 20 yards out in the 39th minute.
The Eagles went into the locker room tied at 1-1, but the Citadel’s leading goal scorer had given her team the momentum.
GSU came out in the second half ready to play but the Citadel Bulldogs were hungry out of the locker room. Junior forward Nicole Leverman put away a shot from about five yards out off of sophomore midfielder Nicholle Griffith’s assist.
Four minutes after that goal The Citadel’s Garcia scored her second goal of the game in the 70th minute. She collected the rebound off of a shot by freshman forward Jannel Johnson and found the back of the net.
GSU junior forward Alex Murphy tried to will the team back with a goal in the 74th minute off freshman forward Callie O’Connor’s assist, but it wasn’t enough.
Johnson put the game out of reach for the Eagles with her unassisted goal in the 84th minute. The game dropped GSU to a record of 6-4-4 with a 2-3-1 conference record.
