Georgia Southern junior defensive end Raymond Johnson III was named Sun Belt defensive player of the week after his performance against South Alabama, announced Monday.

The junior played a key role in the Eagle’s first conference victory, as he blocked a potential game-winning field goal in overtime as well as recovering a fumble in second overtime. That fumble put GS in position to win the game.

Johnson notched three tackles against USA, adding to his overall 20 tackles on the season.

The Eagles will not be playing this week due to a bye, but Johnson and the rest of the football team will be back in action Oct. 19, taking on Coastal Carolina.
