Fake biology newsletter falsely quotes professors

STATESBORO —A fake newsletter was placed in biology department mailboxes last week, presenting the department in a negative light.

The newsletter, titled “What’s Happening in Biology”, was written anonymously and contains false statements by professors in the biology department.

The newsletter quotes and uses pictures of current faculty and staff. In the “Other Departmental News” section, headlines discussed subjects like biology undergraduates being uncultured, mystery shipments to the biology office and leaked documents regarding consolidation.

Stephen P. Vives is a ichthyology, biological basis of behavior and vertebrate zoology professor at Georgia Southern. Vives was put on the front cover of the fake newsletter with a nightcap on.

“I am aware of an anonymously written fake newsletter with fictional quotes that was circulated in the department as an attempt at humor. Although I understand faculty members have freedom of speech, the newsletter does not reflect the values and climate that we are working to achieve in the Department of Biology,” Vives wrote in an email. “We need faculty and students to be supportive and respectful of each other, and work to be the best Biology Department in the region.”

The fake newsletter can be read in the above images.
