STATESBORO — After being listed as day-to-day by head coach Chad Lunsford, for the first time in two seasons, Shai Werts is not the starting quarterback in a Georgia Southern game.

Instead, redshirt-freshman Justin Tomlin will get his first career start as the Eagles look for their first win of the 2019 season.

Tomlin played the entire second half against LSU, going 3-for-8 for 24 yards through the air and picking up four yards on the ground.

“We believe in Justin,” redshirt senior wide receiver Colby Ransom said at Monday’s press conference. “We love Shai and we believe in everyone on our team really, but we know Justin can come in and do the same thing Shai can.”

The Eagles also have redshirt-sophomore Jaalon Frazier and freshman walk-on Will Lovett Jr. on the roster at quarterback.
