STATESBORO — Shai Werts is still listed as day to day, according to head coach Chad Lunsford at Monday’s weekly press conference.

The redshirt-junior quarterback injured his throwing right shoulder in the first half against LSU and has yet to return to game action.

“I was impressed with Shai last week during the bye week practices,” Lunsford said. “We slowly progressed him in. Everything we were asking him to do, he was able to do it.”

In Werts’ absence, redshirt freshman Justin Tomlin has stepped in and competed well. In two and a half games, Tomlin rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns. He also went 12-for-26 for 162 yards through the air.

Werts walked out for the coin toss with his other captains in both games he didn’t play in. Against Maine, he wasn’t dressed, but he was fully dressed in Minnesota.

This week’s game notes have Werts listed above Tomlin on the depth chart.

“(Sunday) night, he looked sharp. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be very telling, but I think he’s come along fine,” Lunsford said. “Hopefully, we see something Tuesday and Wednesday for him to be able to play this Saturday.”
