Eagles fall short in last non-conference game of the season

The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team fell to the University of Alabama at Birmingham 1-0 on Sunday.

“If they were creating a lot of goals…then that would be a problem,” Head Coach Josh Moffet said. “We did get to the backline a couple times but I feel we could’ve drove in a couple more.”

Coming off of a no-result game at UGA on Friday, the team returned to Statesboro for the first home game of the season.

UAB maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the game and sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Eloffson notched four saves for the Eagles.

Both teams played aggressive on defense in the first half, resulting in a scoreless board at the halftime break.

“I felt in the first half, yes they were putting a lot of balls in the box,” Moffet said. “I felt we were closer to creating the best chances in the first half. In the second half, again, we did get behind them and we just struggled with the final ball.”

At around minute 54 in a fit of GS defensive confusion, UAB scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal thanks to a shot from Blazer senior forward Megan Hudgens.

On offense, GS was led by freshman midfielder Karin Winka, who took four shots, and sophomore midfielder Nora Falnes who made the last scoring attempt. The team took a total of five shots the entire game, as compared to the Blazers’ 13.

“They scored out of our mistakes,” said senior forward Frida Brattum. “So, it’s not like we’re getting outplayed or anything like that…We’re just going to leave it and focus on conference for now.”

With this loss, GS holds an overall record of 3-4. The team will begin conference play on Friday when they take on Coastal Carolina on the road.
