The man who killed former Georgia Southern linebacker Edwin Jackson was sentenced Tuesday to three and a half years in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported, according to the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.

Manuel Orrego-Zavala, 38, was ordered by U.S. District Chief Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson for illegally entering the U.S. on two occasions, which is a felony. 

“Mr. Orrego-Zavala re-entered the country illegally for the second time before he put the public safety of Indianapolis at risk and took the lives of two innocent men on Feb. 4, 2018,” U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler said in a statement.

Orrego-Zavala was sentenced on Sept. 21, 2018 to 16 years for the killing of Jackson and Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe. The Guatemalan had also been convicted on two drug felony charges and was removed from the country in 2007 and again in 2009.

Jackson played for the Indianapolis Colts where he started all 16 games in 2016, recording 66 tackles and two sacks.
