2019 Football captains named

The Georgia Southern football team has named their four captains of the 2019 season, head coach Chad Lunsford announced Sunday.

Voted unanimously by the team, redshirt-junior ILB Rashad Byrd, redshirt-senior kicker Tyler Bass, senior cornerback Kindle Vildor and redshirt-junior quarterback Shai Werts will serve as th 2019 team captains.

Bryd played in 10 games last season, starting three. The All-Sun Belt Conference Honorable Mention recipient tallied 54 total tackles, an interception and a forced fumble as well as blocking a field goal last season.

Bass was a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award played in all 13 games last season where he tied the school record with 19 field goals on the season. Bass played a huge role in the 2018 Camellia Bowl win as he kicked the last-second game-winning field goal.

Vildor also played in and started all 13 games in the 2018 season. Before being named to All-Sun Belt Conference First Team, the cornerback totaled 42 tackles on the season as well as leading the team with four interceptions. 

Finally, Werts played in and started all 13 games last season, rushing for 908 yards and passing for 987 yards. The redshirt-junior was also the only starting quarterback in the FBS to not throw an interception on the season. 

The four will be leading the Eagles as they take on their first opponent at LSU in Baton Rouge, Saturday, Aug. 31.
