As a part of No Impact Week, the Rotunda is surrounded by students and faculty members of the Center for Sustainability who are promoting the benefits of sustainability in the environment this morning.
The Center for Sustainability at Georgia Southern also promotes the careful use of the earth’s resources such as air, water, energy and soil.
From trash to transportation, each day of No Impact Week is devoted to educating the Georgia Southern population about an important aspect of the environment. Today’s aspect is water.
Biology professor and CFS Director Lissa Leege has seen growth in the organization over the years.
“This is the biggest No Impact Week we’ve ever had at GSU,” Leege said. “With over 80 events happening within just one week, we’ve gotten over 1000 participants to register with us.”
Along with tables of class projects made by biology students and practicum interns, the Center for Sustainability has set up booths of games and contests for Eagles to participate in while learning about sustainability.
In addition, booths are selling, as well as giving away, recycled goods and environment-themed food.
Haley Peyton, a senior biology major, is one of the practicum students displaying her sustainability project on filtration of storm water at the Rotunda.
“My table educates about a natural way to filter storm water by removing collagens in water and preventing too much rain water from all going to one place,” Peyton said.
Students can be a part of No Impact Week by attending exhibits and showcases throughout campus during the week.
Tonight events feature the 2nd annual Ocean Film Festival beginning at 6:30 pm in the Russell Union Theater.
Tomorrow’s theme of No Impact Week will focus on the aspects of transportation in the environment.
