The Georgia Southern softball team went 1-2 in a three game series against the South Alabama Jaguars this weekend.

Friday night, GS was held scoreless for the first four innings of the game, while the Jaguars put five up on the board. In the fifth period, two RBI from senior catcher Logan Harrell and senior infielder Hannah Farrell cut the deficit to three in a 5-2 score.

When the Jaguars came to bat at the bottom of the fifth, they answered these runs with four more of their own.

In the seventh inning, Farrell blasted a home run and brought home two more. She has had at least one hit in each of the past seven games at this point. Senior pitcher Kaylee Ramos took the loss in her three innings of work, giving up four runs, while striking out two and walking one. GS fell 9-4 in this game.

In game two of the series, GS set the tone and bounced back by adding another win to the schedule. This was a strong game from sophomore pitcher Rylee Waldrep and junior outfielder Shayla Smith.

Smith put the Eagles on the board with an RBI single in the second inning, and the Jaguars responded with two runs in the third. Another double RBI from Smith in the fourth gave GS a 3-2 lead.

Harrell, sophomore outfielder Ellington Day, junior outfielder Mekhia Freeman and Farrell added four more runs to contribute to this crucial 5-2 team win.

Waldrep had a fantastic game, pitching all seven innings and only allowing two runs. She managed to strike out four to balance out a good offensive game for the Eagles.

In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, GS was not able to keep this momentum going and was defeated 5-2. South Alabama scored four runs in the first inning, while GS got on the board in the third due to senior Macy Coleman’s solo home run.

The Jaguars immediately responded in at the bottom of the third with a final run that would be the icing on the cake. Another RBI by Coleman in the fourth, with the run by freshman infielder Ashlynn Gunter, was the last time GS would be able to score in the game.

Freshman pitcher Ashleigh Morton took the loss during this game, allowing four runs with five hits.

Now 20-27 and 6-17 in the conference, GS has one more series left in the season which will be at home against rival Georgia State. In order to qualify for the 2019 Sun Belt Tournament, the team must win two more games. GS is currently placed ninth in the ten team conference standings.
