Letter to the Editor: The Youth Vote

Jordan Gilliard, Student at Georgia Southern

Dear Editor,

Election Day is fast approaching, and I will make sure that my voice is heard because I care about my future. I care about issues in my country and my community. I want to see change. I want to see police reform. I want to see new innovative policies be put into place.

Young people are the future and the youth demographic is severely underrepresented when it comes to voting. Historically young people have turned out to vote at lower rates than older adults, but it is time for us to change that. In 2018 we saw that the youth turnout was the highest ever recorded for a midterm election. I say, let us build upon that and get out the vote. I know that my peers want to see the same change that I do.

I am encouraging all young people to make a voting plan immediately. Research your ballot, because president is not the only position that we will be voting for. Studentvote.org is a great tool that can help young people make a voting plan. Early voting is now open in Georgia so there is no need to wait, get out and vote!
