The Georgia Southern softball team defeated the College of Charleston on Eagle Field, 2-1, in a non-conference game on Wednesday night.

GS junior Mekhia Freeman was responsible for both scoring runs. Closely trailing by one in the first two innings, GS got on the board with Freeman’s RBI single in the third inning, which ran in freshman Jess Mazur.

In the fifth inning, sophomore Ellington Day brought home the scoring run thanks to another Freeman RBI.

Junior outfielders Shayla Smith and Shelby Wilson were sharp on defense, contributing six putouts and five assists combined.

GS rotated through four pitchers for the game, but majority of the game was pitched by freshman Jodi Handler. She only allowed three hits, none of which turned into scoring runs.

The Cougar’s only run came from freshman catcher Jenna Halberg’s RBI with the run by Noel Dominguez.

With this win, GS improves to 18-19 and will resume conference play at home on Friday against Troy at 5:30 p.m.
