Be prepared for a night of mystery, intrigue, and English accents as Armstrong Masquers Summer Theatre performs And Then There Were None.
Under the direction of theatre professor Peter Mellen, Armstrong presents And Then There Were None from Thursday to Sunday, June 26th-29th. And Then There Were None is a mystery novel by English playwright Agatha Christie. Drama and surprise ensues as unsuspecting houseguests are killed in Christie’s whodunit play.
“Ten strangers, each with a dark secret, are lured to a mansion on an uninhabited island and killed off one by one,” said Mellen.
The play will be performed in Jenkins Hall Theater with a Tudor style set. According to Mellen, the play takes place in the living room of a large castle-like house.
“We attempted to create the room as Christi describes it. We were guided by the script itself in terms of lighting, costumes, sound, set design – trying to recreate Christi’s lonely island mansion in the late 1940’s,” said Mellen.
Gabriel Michael, English and theater major and senior, plays Dr. Edward Armstrong. Michael describes his character as a fussy nerve doctor with a habit.
Michael says that he really enjoys the murder mystery and horror genre, but the main reason he auditioned was Dr. Mellen.
“The number one reason is Dr. Peter Mellen. Just the way he works, he’s so organic but he’s so fun and so easy going… I wouldn’t have done a show without him,” Michael said.
This is not Mellen’s first mystery rodeo. According to Mellen he directed Agatha Christi’s The Mouse Trap three years ago and he also contributed to the “Summer of Mystery,” a three part murder mystery summer special with the same set.
Michael is most looking forward to the audience’s reaction.
“I hope the audience is on the edge of their seats and I’m excited to see the audience react to who they thought was the killer and who wasn’t,” said Michael.
