One of the stars of this year’s women’s basketball team has been Alexis Brown. As a junior she has contributed to the team and has added to the success of Georgia Southern basketball, adding to the history books.

“I started playing travel ball in the seventh or eighth grade so by the time I hit eighth I knew I wanted to play from then on,” Brown said.

Starting basketball at a young age, Brown knew she wanted to be involved in this sport for a long time. The love of basketball must’ve run in the family because Brown’s brother Tookie Brown currently plays for the GS men’s team.

Since being in college together Brown shared that her and her brother have helped each other as an encouraging support system.

“He’s helped me when I’ve been down,” Brown said.”Because when I first got here I wasn’t playing that much, so he kept telling me to be patient, stay in the gym, keep working out on your own and it’ll pay off.”

In the three years Brown has been at GS, she has made a dent in GS Basketball history. During her freshman year she started 13 out of the 29 games she played in. She also shot at 45 percent from field goal range and that’s just the beginning.

As a sophomore Brown started 22 out of 26 games and she became one of eight GS Women’s basketball players to score 100 percent from the line in a single-game.

As of Saturday, if Brown scores three three-pointers then her ranking will jump from fourth to second place.  

Brown then needs only seven points in Saturday’s game so that she will be the first GS player to score over 500+ points in a single season, since Gwen Thomas did it in her 1991-92 season.

“I have a lot of confidence in my shot,” Brown said. “I feel like I put up a lot of shots before the game and throughout practice so I’m pretty confident.”

Brown knows her strengths and that has helped her play her best game this season. She has a flexible mentality and is able to help her teammates, however, she plays with her strengths in mind.

“I feel like I’m a good three-point shooter and I’m really good at penetrating,” Brown said. “I started the season off penetrating a lot and getting to the free throw line, but people started playing me different because they know I can get to the free throw line.”

Brown’s final game of the season will be on Saturday against the Eagles’ in-state rivals, the Georgia State Panthers. Tip off is at 2 p.m. and Brown hopes to break a few records in this game.
