Georgia Southern baseball hosts UNC-Asheville looking to get to .500 for the first time of the young season.

After starting 5-6 due to a strong schedule, GS continues their home stand where they host UNC-Asheville, amidst an action-packed sports weekend in Statesboro.

With the annual Blue and White spring game, the men’s basketball team looking to clinch a regular season championship, as well as softball hosting rival App State, the Eagles’ series against UNC-Asheville goes under-looked but could show a lot about how the 2019 team will pan out.

GS comes into the weekend series winning two in a row, beating down Mercer 13-3 on Wednesday after toppling UGA behind one of the weirdest innings of baseball imaginable.

Sitting at 3-4 at home, the Eagles will look to improve that against an Asheville team who just hasn’t played very well in the early goings of the season. The Bulldogs have had pitching woes, allowing 12 or more runs in five games already, including a 17-14 win against UMBC just weeks ago, and have failed to score enough runs to cover that deficiency properly.

At the plate, the early struggles for GS are no surprise given the level of competition faced, despite piling up 23 runs in the last two games, so look for junior outfielder Mason McWhorter and the rest of the offense to start to come alive against a lackluster opponent.

The Eagles send the same trio of weekend pitchers that has been used every week in junior RHP Seth Shuman, freshman LHP Braden Hays and senior RHP Daniel Collins. Shuman goes on Friday night, followed by Hays and Collins on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and after weekend series against West Virginia and Georgia, perhaps the pitching staff gets a reprieve of sorts.

Friday night’s action between GS and UNC-Asheville from J.I. Clements Stadium is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
