The Armstrong Pirates women’s golf team went into last week’s Peach Belt Conference Tournament with a lot of momentum after having a great regular season that saw them win two tournaments and finish in the top ten four other times. They opened up the weekend strong, jumping out a seven-stroke lead on Friday, April 15.
The Pirates did not relinquished that lead as they went wire-to-wire and brought home their second PBC Championship in team history. This is their first title since 2012 and their second since first fielding a team in 2010.
Armstrong looked to be on the verge of letting their commanding lead slip away Sunday, April 17, as Flagler College began to work their way towards the top, cutting the Pirates’ lead to just three strokes on the front nine.
However, senior Pamela Mosley led her team with a final-round 76 and holding the Lions off on the back nine. She shot a team-low 270 on the weekend, finishing fourth individually and earning All-PBC Tournament honors.
Mosley was not alone in her success as senior Brendie Rockholt carded a 79 Sunday to finish in sixth place individually with a 234 total, while freshman Bailey Buie shot an 80 to finish tied for seventh individually with a 235 total.
Head coach Michael Butler has held his position with the Pirates since the team came about in 2010 and was more than excited to bring the trophy back to Savannah.
“I think it’s fantastic for us to get this win under these conditions,” Butler told the official Armstrong athletics website.
“Senior Pamela Mosley came up with a big round today and helped us pick up our second Peach Belt championship. It is a big win for our program, and our team has a lot of momentum and confidence heading into the NCAA Championships in Pensacola in two weeks.”
The Pirates earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament South Regionals, which take place beginning Monday, May 2, in Pensacola, Florida. The NCAA will make selections for the tournament Monday, April 25, a week earlier.
