Assessing Georgia Southern’s top prospects
January 22, 2019
National Signing Day is Feb. 6 which leaves the Eagles less than a month to make their mark on the 2019 football recruiting class. After the early signing day in December, Georgia Southern ranks sixth in Sun Belt standings compared to finishing second in 2018.
GS had 16 prospects sign early with six of the signees already enrolled in classes this spring semester. The Eagles also had Oklahoma State running back transfer J.D. King enroll for spring 2019, though he won’t be eligible for 2019, and Savannah State graduate transfer defensive back Donald Rutledge will be available for the 2019 season.
There are also three GS commits who have yet to sign — three-star wide receiver Milton Jackson and two-star offensive tackles Caelan Williams and Daniel King.
But coming off a historic season, many fans and analysts expect GS’ recruiting class to mirror the on-field success.
There are still nine prospects that are uncommitted and are high on the radar for the Eagles.
Ja’Darien Boykin, Jones County
This four-star defensive end has 15 FBS offers including Arizona State, Louisville and Washington State. Boykin has had official visits at UL and Miami and his top three interests are UL, UM and Colorado State. He has also unofficially visited Georgia Tech. With eight Power 5 offers, it’s unlikely Boykin chooses GS, but he’s still a high choice for the Eagles. There are currently nine defensive ends on the 2019 GS roster.
Tyler Devera, Bergen Catholic (New Jersey)
This three-star tight end has received 13 FBS offers including Colorado, Louisville and Louisiana-Monroe. Devera committed to Rutgers in June, but decommitted a month later. The six-foot-four tight end has taken official visits to Colorado, Louisville and Massachusetts. Several sites have forecasted that Devera will sign with UMass. In his senior year, Devera averaged more than 51 yards per game and scored five touchdowns. There are currently three tight ends on the 2019 GS roster.
Ryan Fitzgerald, Colquitt County
This five-star kicker has 10 FBS offers including Houston, Kansas and UCF. His only official visit was to KU and 247Sports has his top three interests as KU, UCF and Georgia. Fitzgerald was named the 2017 and 2018 Consensus All-American kicker. In his senior season, Fitzgerald made all 67 extra points and 22 of his 27 attempted field goals. There are currently two kickers on the 2019 GS roster.
Edward Gipson, Pelham (Alabama)
This three-star wide receiver has received seven FBS offers including Indiana, South Alabama and Tulane. Gipson took an official visit to USA in December and has received ample interest from the Jaguars. Ranked the 40th best player in Alabama, Gipson is six-foot-three, 190 pounds and has raw ability to break down the field on screen passes. GS currently has eight wide receivers on the 2019 roster.
Christian Harris, Baylor School (Tennessee)
This three-star defensive end has received eight FBS offers including Air Force, Army and Marshall. Harris has yet to officially visit anywhere, but has unofficially visited Elon, Liberty, Michigan State, North Carolina, Old Dominion and Richmond. At six-foot-three, 245 pounds, Harris is the 55th highest ranked player in Tennessee. There are currently nine defensive ends on the 2019 GS roster.
Zykamren Robinson, Spartanburg (South Carolina)
This three-star running back has received nine FBS offers including Appalachian State, South Carolina and Tennessee. Robinson has taken multiple unofficial visits to USC and attended Gamecocks camp in June. The five-foot-11, 222 pound running back also unofficially visited Tennessee and Wake Forest and went to App State’s Junior Day. His junior and senior year, Robinson averaged 80 yards per game with 12 touchdowns. There are currently eight running backs on the 2019 GS roster.
Nicholas Sheetz, Emerald (South Carolina)
This two-star defensive end has eight FBS offers including Air Force, Troy and USF. Sheetz has strong interest in Washington State and being a preferred walk-on, per 247Sports. Sheetz has taken an official visit to GS. There are currently nine defensive ends on the 2019 GS roster.
Jamel Starks, Southwest Dekalb
This three-star athlete has 28 FBS offers including Nebraska, North Carolina State and West Virginia. Multiple sites have reported that Starks is expected to commit to Nebraska soon after his two official visits to Lincoln. Starks has had official visits to UN, NC State and West Virginia. At five-foot-11, 180 pounds, Starks is the 85 best player in Georgia.
Dariyan Wiley, Douglas County
This three-star athlete has 12 FBS offers, but per 247Sports he has strong interest in Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, GS and Massachusetts. Wiley has officially visited GS and UMass. At six-foot-three, Wiley is ranked 204th in Georgia. In his senior season, Wiley finished with 43.7 receiving yards per game, a touchdown and nine total tackles for the Tigers.
