GS announces 266 positive COVID-19 cases after third week

Georgia Southern saw an almost 50% drop in COVID-19 cases last week, announcing Monday 256 positive COVID-19 cases in the third week of class.

This report approaches GS’ all-time record of COVID-19 cases, having reported 508 cases during the second week of the fall 2020 semester.

Last week, GS’s weekly count was just six cases short of their 2020 record, at 502 cases. This week that number dropped to 256

January 14, Bulloch County peaked a new all-time record at 172.5 positive COVID-19 cases per 100k each day. Since then, cases have dropped to 83.8 per 100k, still higher than last January’s daily averages, according to CovidActNow.

“Although vaccines remain effective at preventing severe disease, the CDC emphasizes everyone 18 years of age and older should receive a booster dose based on decreasing protection over time and the recent emergence of the Omicron variant,” read GS’ weekly report. “We continue to urge all students, faculty, staff and visitors to get vaccinated either on campus or with a local provider. Additionally, everyone is encouraged to wear a mask or face covering while inside campus facilities.”

87 cases were reported from employees. 406 cases were reported on Statesboro’s campus, 94 on Armstrong’s campus and two on Liberty’s campus.
