Eagles split weekend games against Gamecocks and Runnin’ Bulldogs
August 26, 2018
The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team (1-3) scored their first goal of the season Friday night in a 1-0 win over Jacksonville State, but couldn’t carry the momentum into Sunday afternoon’s 3-0 loss at Gardner-Webb.
1-0 vs Jacksonville State (2-1)
The Eagles dominated possession most of the way, scoring the games’ only goal and their first goal of the young season in just the fifth minute of action. It was sophomore forward Brogan Boudreaux with the goal off an assist from redshirt junior forward Halle Huff that gave the Eagles the lead, and eventually, the win.
“It was very impressive from our players, they bounced back from a tough opening weekend,” Head Coach Brian Dunleavy said to gseagles.
GS showed positive improvement from their first two games, where they lost each three to nothing, but against the Gamecocks, the offense dictated the game, and the Eagles had multiple opportunities to put the game out of reach with additional goals.
0-3 at Gardner-Webb (2-2)
The Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb were a completely different story. The home team scored in the third minute and never looked back. Though the Eagles kept pressing with Boudreaux and Huff, they just couldn’t convert on any of the balls that were passed into the box.
Then in the 21st minute, Gardner-Webb doubled their lead. GS kept trying and ended with 12 shots on the afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to make the Runnin’ Bulldogs nervous at all. In the 32nd minute, Ty Snell capped the scoring for the day, giving the Eagles their third 3-0 shutout of the season.
“We’re struggling a little bit here at the start of the season,” Dunleavy said to gseagles. “We’ll grow from this, and move forward together.”
What’s next?
The Eagles will have two home games this weekend with Stetson and Davidson coming to Eagle Field. GS will face Stetson Friday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m., and face Davidson Sunday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m.
