Georgia Southern took a 34-23 lead late in the 4th quarter gaining them their 3rd non-conference win of the season.

The first quarter started out slow for GS as their first 6 points came from two field goals by Alex Raynor. Gerald Green then scored the Eagles first touchdown late into the 2nd quarter

“We got to come out a little faster on offense. We go down with the intention of getting six every time, not three. We don’t want to be in that position anyway, but I am super proud of this team offensively and defensively,” said quarterback Kyle Vantrease, “Special teams and their resiliency to come back and keep fighting and then take the lead and then come out with the win.”

GS trailed 23-20 in the fourth quarter but were able to score 14 unanswered points with 1 touchdown from Jjay Mcafee and a 47-yard pass from Vantrease to Amare Jones. Vantrease completed 26 out of 39 passes, finishing with 310 passing yards to go along with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

“Our kids are gaining confidence with each week and they’re learning lessons,  they know how hard it is to win games, But this team in this locker room, they learned they’re gaining confidence,” stated Coach Helton, “They won three games last year, now they’ve won three games in September.”

Highlights of the game:

Derwin Burgess Jr. finished with 133 receiving yards on five catches, and Jones collected 94 yards on seven receptions along with the big touchdown.

Jalen White ran for 69 yards, and Gerald Green rushed for 38 yards and a TD.

Four Eagles in total had 10 tackles with Derrick Canteen tallying nine solo stops, a tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

Georgia Southern will be back on the road next Saturday to open up their Sun belt Conference play at Coastal Carolina.
