The lady eagles bench outscored the entire Allen team 58-47 in their 2022-23 season opener

The Eagles started the game off on a 31-2 run that lasted for the majority of the 1st quarter. Their combined offense and defense continued to overpower Allen as they finished the quarter 34-8. The Eagles shot a very efficient 60 percent in the first quarter and held the Yellow Jackets to an abysmal 11 percent from the field as well as 12 percent from 3-point range.

The second quarter didn’t see the same offensive efficiency, but the defense continued to shut down Allens offense, only allowing them 12 points the entire quarter. They shot 26 percent from the field and 20 percent from 3-point range.

What’s new: The eagles scored the second highest in a season opener in school history, behind only a 101-66 win over Tift in the very first intercollegiate game played by Georgia Southern women’s basketball against Tift College in 1974.

The Eagles continued the theme of stifling defense the entire second half. Allen was held to 14 points in the 3rd, the highest point total all game, and 13 points in the 4th. Conversely, the Eagles scored 22 in the third, and 21 in the fourth. This put the final score at 99-47 with the Eagles being 1 point shy of a century game.

Game Highlights:

  • Tarren Ward led all scores with 15 points. She also put up 5 assists, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals
  • Le’Andrea Gillis was second on the team in scoring with 12 points. She went 2/3 from behind the arc
  • Diamond Strokes, Constance Thomas, Paris Miller, Andreana Wrister, and Ja’nya Love-Hill all hit double digits for the Eagles.
  • Thomas also led the Eagles in assists(7) and steals(5)
  • Shy Booker led the team in rebounds with 10

What’s next: The Eagles play their 2nd game Sunday, at Charleston Southern for a 1 p.m. against the Bucs in Charleston, S.C.
