The Flowergirl: Prepping for their busiest day of the year

The Flowergirl, a florist shop located in Statesboro, Georgia, gears up for one of their busiest and most unpredictable days of the year.

Valentine’s Day is one day that Jacquelyn Phillips, owner of The Flowergirl, begins planning in January.

  • Making sure the flowers are prepped and ready for Valentine’s Day is a process, according to Phillips.
  • “I’m looking for new trends and I’m placing the order, so I can get them in on time,” Phillips said. “Then the day of, I go to Savannah to a wholesaler to pick them up. It takes two to three trips.”

When asked how much the business makes on Valentine’s Day, Phillips said she could not give a definite answer.

  • “Every single year is a little bit different,” Phillips said. “There’s no way to judge it. It’s probably the scariest day for florists.”
  • On Valentine’s Day, Phillips sets up a flower bar outside of her business and sells her flowers. In 2022, she sold everything.

Phillips’ 18-year-old daughter, Izy Hane, helps out around the shop frequently. She weighed in on the Valentine’s Day hustle and bustle.

  • “It is our busiest day of the year,” Hane said. “She primarily does weddings and events with the exception of Valentine’s Day. It’s packed from 8 a.m. until we sell out of flowers.”

The Flowergirl has be a part of the Statesboro community for 14 years.
