Eagles draw Warhawks in quarterfinals of Sun Belt tournament
March 8, 2018
The last time Georgia Southern matched up against Louisiana-Monroe was a complete catastrophe as the struggling Warhawks beat the Eagles in overtime Feb. 8.
The Warhawks’ win in Hanner Fieldhouse sparked a five game winning streak which featured wins over three of the top four teams in the Sun Belt.
They have also won 7 of their past 9 games. Travis Munnings and Sam McDaniel, the Warhawks’ leading scorers have had great seasons, both of them earning All-Sun Belt honors.
Munnings averages 16 points and 7 rebounds a game. His 6’6” stature makes him able to powerfully drive the lane, but also hard to shoot around on defense.
In the first matchup against ULM, Munnings astoundingly played all 45 minutes and picked up an insane 20 rebounds to go with his 26 points.
Senior guard from Australia Sam McDaniel also had a fabulous game against the Eagles scoring 23 points and coming down with 9 rebounds.
However, in their Wednesday night win over Arkansas State, both these players took the back seat to senior guard Marvin Jean-Pierre who had 23 points in the blowout over the Red Wolves.
So now with three viable scorers on a hot streak, how are the Eagles supposed to slow them down? By sticking to their game.
Saturday’s win over Troy may have been the perfect blueprint for the Eagles’ offense.
Tookie dishing the ball while also scoring a ton, Mike Hughes contributing from the free throw line and Jake Allmsiller lighting it up from beyond the arc.
If the Eagles can carry their offense over, there shouldn’t be any problem.
“The best thing we can do is stay together,” senior guard Mike Hughes said.
They will also need board production from Montae Glenn. The junior averages eight rebounds a game and had 10 the last time they faced the Warhawks.
“We’ll be locked in,” coach Mark Byington said. “You want to go out swinging and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
GS will tip-off against ULM Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET from Lakefront Arena in New Orleans. The game will be available on ESPN3.
