Football spring practice report March 22

Two weeks ago, Coye Simmons gave the push the Georgia Southern basketball team needed to beat ULM in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt tournament.

Thursday afternoon, he was in football pads attacking the edge in the fourth spring practice.

The true senior is working out with the football team, but hasn’t been given a spot on the team.

He hasn’t played football in a long time and is working out to see if he’s interested and the team is seeing if he has the skill to make the FBS football team. At Tuesday’s practice, Simmons lined up at tight end, but Thursday he lined up on the defensive side as a defensive end.

Obviously, he was noticeably behind the other linebackers. Simmons certainly has the size to play on the line, but will need to build more upper body muscle to avoid being pancaked.

It’s a unique situation for Simmons and the rest of the team and something to look at for the rest of spring.
