Heading into this school year, Trish Evans, GroupFit director, made her goals clear. She said, “ I really want to eliminate the stigma of gym intimidation so everyone can feel comfortable.”
Gym intimidation is a major topic, especially among college students. Going to the RAC can be scary if you’ve never been, but GroupFit is a great way to get out of the house and try something new. Evans added, “It’s a great opportunity to find a sense of community and get out of the house to have some fun.”
To kick off this year’s special events, GroupFit hosted ‘Flow and Glow’, a glow-in-the-dark yoga event. At the event, the room was completely blacked out with blacklights around the perimeter of the studio. The goal was to transform the room into a comfortable, safe space for students who may be scared to go to a fitness class. Prior to entering, attendees loaded up on glow sticks, lights, and more.
Riley Nunez, Senior, attended the event, but this wasn’t her first GroupFit experience. “I’ve been going to GroupFit classes since my freshman year, and I love them,” Nunez said. “I love seeing the familiar faces, and with events like Flow and Glow, it’s easier for people to break out of their shell.”
The GroupFit team is full of certified instructors to help students with their fitness journey. Chloe Lyle, a cycling instructor, said, “I love that I get to share my love for fitness with others and see how much they enjoy it.”
Nathalia Davidson, Junior, has been teaching GroupFit for two years, and was an instructor for the Flow and Glow event. “I love teaching yoga because it helps with your posture and how much it can impact your everyday life,” she said. “GroupFit as a whole is so welcoming and kind to all the patrons. We love hearing new suggestions and ways for students to get more involved.”
Students can expect future GroupFit events like Pedal and Popcorn, Rhythm and Ride, Zumba, Glowchella and more. If students are looking for more ways to be involved, there are plenty of options. To find more information and sign up for classes, go to IMLeagues or the Group Fitness Schedule.
