The Society of Women Engineers hosted an interest meeting for those a part of the organization that want to go to the national conference in Chicago.
Five women from the society will be chosen to attend in order to network with other female engineers across the country. It is the world’s largest conference for women in engineering and technology, and it will be from October 24-26.
Students who attended the interest meeting said that they have high hopes to be chosen to go.
“About this meeting, I was just excited to see all my friends that I have not seen over the summer. Like I said, I know I’m going to the conference so I was excited to maybe meet some new girls, see if they were interested in going,” said Senior Elsie Lappin.
The SWE became an organization in 1950 after a shortage of men in the engineering industry due to World War ll. At the Georgia Southern Chapter, the ladies strive for more inclusivity and opportunity in their male-dominated industry.
At the meeting, President Nichole Buenviaje Christian said that their ultimate goal is to empower women and make their voices heard within the field.
“There are a lot more men than women. So, I like seeing a few women and I like knowing that we are there for each other in the male-leading field,” said SWE President Nichole Buenviaje Christian.
The Society of Women Engineers will host their first general body meeting on August 27, from 7-8 p.m. in room 1206 of the IT Building.
