Students filled the Williams Center MPR to enjoy music, traditional dance performances, food and a bull ride at the Hispanic Heritage Kickoff Celebration yesterday afternoon.
This celebratory event is put on by the Office of Multicultural Affairs each year to spread awareness for diversity, equity and inclusivity. The goal is to encourage GS students to learn about new cultures and uncover things about themselves, OMA Programming Coordinator, Anastasia Cray explained.
“My favorite part was the music,” senior Gabe Ramirez said. “I’m Hispanic and it reminded me of home.”
National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15. OMA Director Dr. Kevin Reese explained that it is important for students to recognize and learn about the unique contributions of Hispanic culture to America during Hispanic Heritage Month.
“My grandmother would always say, you learn something new every day, and when you’re still learning, you’re still growing,” Reese said. “It’s a great chance to learn and grow while you have fun.”
Next month, students can look forward to Unity Fest on Oct. 17. Stay up to date with future events on the OMA website.
