The Caribbean Student Association (CSA) is one of the many student-led organizations on campus that celebrates cultural heritage through love, music, dance, and community. Like all cultural associations on campus, CSA can be highlighted for its vibrant events and welcoming atmosphere.
The CSA hosts many different events such as, “fashion shows, movie nights, bonfires, Friendsgiving, homecoming tailgate, and plate sales [featuring different Caribbean dishes],” Elise Moody, Public Relations Chair of CSA explained. “One of my favorite memories is always going to be the fashion show,” she said.
Not only does CSA host unique events, but they also have educational gatherings where you can go and learn about different Caribbean countries. “We bring awareness of Caribbean culture and all of its attributes, from every island to our beautiful campus at Georgia Southern,” said Community Service Chair, Kye Reid.
If you aren’t Caribbean, or of Caribbean descent, don’t feel discouraged about joining. Kye Reid emphasizes that as long as you are respectful, you are welcome. “We’re welcoming everyone with open arms, you don’t have to be Caribbean – anyone on the Georgia Southern campus can join.”
Members of CSA will immerse themselves in the diverse cultures of different Caribbean Islands while meeting with people of the same interests. Members will get to experience signature foods, and dances, and listen to Caribbean music genres such as Dancehall, Soca, Reggae, and more. “It’s just great getting to meet different people, getting to dance to different Caribbean songs, and learning traditional dances,” Elise Moody.
