Up In Flames is an annual event on both the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses. Its main purpose is to remind students of the dangers and circumstances of fires and to showcase the Fire Department’s response to such events.
The event is organized by Fire and Life Safety, a division of Georgia Southern University. The division is Georgia Southern University’s method of providing a safe environment and experience for their faculty, staff, students, and visitors across all campuses. They do this by, among other things, providing fire safety education to the university community.
This year’s Up In Flames happened just yesterday, with people gathering around to watch a mock burn of a college dorm. They also saw how the fire department responded to the fire. The event had free food, prizes, and activities for all attending.
Justin Taylor, the Fire Prevention Chief for Statesboro Fire Department explained that one goal of this event is to show the importance of safety systems in homes.
“We don’t really pay them [home safety systems] any attention in your mind, but it just kind of brings to light how important they are, you know, in helping keep the individual safe in an event of a fire,” Taylor said.
