Georgia Southern has offered resources on-campus for all community members, students, and staff while Statesboro recovers from hurricane Helene.
Helene has left Statesboro with broken traffic lights, fallen trees, and power outages all through the community – leaving some individuals with limited food resources.
After the storm, the Dining Commons offered non-perishables in bag lunches to offer students in need this past Saturday, following the power outage.
The Dining Commons opened its doors to all students, faculty, and their families regardless of their meal plan status on Monday. Students who have a meal plan are not being charged at this time. These resources are planned to continue until campus is fully open on Monday, Oct. 7 during the hours of breakfast (8 a.m. -10 a.m.), lunch (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) and dinner (4 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
Freshman Imran Daramala expressed his gratitude to Georgia Southern’s services for acting quickly enough to provide resources for students after the storm.
“They did their best to give food to everyone, people who have dining plans or not, and even families from outside,” Daramala said. They’re doing their best because a hurricane is not something they can control.”
Some students who live off campus are using the Dining Commons as a place to charge their devices and access wifi.
Junior Gabriel Green shares that living off campus without a meal plan has limited his resources.
“Anyone can come in and get however many meals they need, even though they have limited hours of operation,” Green said.
Students without water or power can access showers at the RAC in Statesboro from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. until Sunday, Oct. 6.
