70 East Georgia State College students took shelter at Armstrong following Hurricane Helene.
In a press release sent on Monday, President Kyle Marrero informed students and faculty of the relief efforts Georgia Southern has taken to support local and regional communities. Included in the list were details about “displaced” EGSC students.
“The storm itself actually didn’t actually feel that bad,” said L Glore, a freshman at EGSC. “When we woke up in the morning we had, like, no power.”
EGSC students initially evacuated to GSU’s Statesboro campus, then were brought to Armstrong’s Windward Commons dorms, according to Glore.
“There’s been hurricanes before, but they didn’t hit like this. So this is all new to me,” said Alisa Freeman, an EGSC freshman majoring in animal science.
Freeman said they felt that GSU “did what they could cause they were also in the same situation as us.”
Glore felt the university could have been better prepared with generators and water bottles.
EGSC has campuses in Swainsboro, Statesboro and Augusta, all of which were deeply impacted by Hurricane Helene.
Currently, only 38 EGSC students are still sheltering, according to the college’s website. It is unclear how long they will remain on the Armstrong campus.
