National Hazing Prevention Week is a time where institutions raise awareness and empower people to prevent hazing.
Fraternities and sororities across the entire nation gather to remember those who have suffered or lost their lives to hazing, and use this week as a reminder that hazing is unlawful and untolerable.
“We have a zero hazing policy and we make that very clear on the first day since bid day,” Vice President of Finance at Kappa Delta, Bella Landis said. “We have every member sign a no-hazing contract to ensure that we enforce and let members know that we do not allow it at all.”
During this week, Georgia Southern’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Department works towards educating those about the definition of hazing, how to spot it, and how to take action on it.
“I think Hazing Prevention Week should be recognized because it is a serious issue that all of Greek life faces,” Sigma Chi President, Evan Belding said. “It needs to be something that is completely wiped out and doesn’t even need to be an issue anymore, and that starts with prevention and awareness.”
“It can be a very dangerous thing and a lot of stuff can happen, and it’s important that everybody cares about the people they’re accepting into their brotherhood,” member of Theta Xi, Walt Bryant said.
Georgia Southern aims to educate students on campus about hazing and how to prevent it.
If you or someone you know witnesses any act of hazing, please call the hazing hotline at 1-877-516-3445. All calls to the hotline will be handled in a confidential manner.
