Statesboro’s YMCA held their 5K Heart Run on Saturday Feb. 8. This event is dedicated to raising awareness and providing funds to combat heart disease.
Participants of any and all ages were welcome to join and had to pay $30 to $40. All funds will be going to the Heartworks program. The Heartworks program is a twelve week program where participants partner one on one with a graduate student for a healthy heart for free.
“So that’s going to pay for their year membership,” said YMCA Executive Director Hannah Beggs. “That’s going to pay for their equipment as well.”
The winners of this 5k went to second place Orinthal Striggles and first place Orin Striggles.
“We decided to look for a race happening this weekend so that we could compete because we love running,” said Orinthal Striggles. “I found this race and my son agreed to try and challenge me and so we’re here.”
Runners were met at the finish line with support from their families and friends. Registration is open six months in advance. For more information, contact the YMCA’s website.
