The Office of Multicultural Affairs hosted an event Wednesday night at the Interdisciplinary Academic Building to celebrate Black History and to inform students about black organizations on campus.
The event was run by Sisters With Vision (SWV), a student organization focusing on academic excellence. It had a variety of activities, including presentations, spoken word poetry and more. SWV wanted to host many different black organizations on campus and for them to talk about their impact on their community.
“The goal for today is to remind everyone that Black History is not just to remember the past, but to remind us that we’re still the future,” says Success Emmanuel, president of Sisters With Vision, “The whole event is to focus on Black history as Black excellence.”
Before starting the event, the Georgia Southern Gospel Choir was invited to sing a worship song.
“We love Black History, especially just with everything around the world,” said Amare McJolly, club president. “It was very important for us this semester to make sure that we did something.”
McJolly also told attendees how they could join the choir by visiting them at the Foy Building every Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The event had many organization presentations, such as the National Council of Negro Women, Georgia Southern Society of Black Engineers, and the Men of Vision and Excellence. These presentations help introduce attendees to clubs that can help them improve their academic skills.
The event ended with Emmanuel thanking the attendees and club leaders for coming out.
