The fall semester is officially in full swing here at Armstrong, despite the ever-present long, sweltering days that accompany a coastal Georgia August. As students filled campus benches and commons on the first day, staff and organizers shared information about Greek life, leadership programs and volunteer opportunities.
Emma Grace Mancini, assistant director of Armstrong’s Fraternity and Sorority Life program, invited students to join the Greeks at the Residential Plaza on Aug. 28 for the “Hot Dogs to Go” event. This event will give students the opportunity to meet members here at Armstrong and to learn about the activities that they offer.
Although there are currently no active fraternities at Armstrong, male students are encouraged to help reinstate these chapters by reaching out to Greek life resources on campus. Recruitment for fraternities and sororities is continuous on our campus, meaning that interested students can get involved at any time throughout the year by meeting members or attending chapter events.
“It’s pretty choose-your-own-adventure,” Mancini said.

Eagle Experience, a coalition designed to introduce students to campus life and help them get involved, also welcomed students on the first day with information cards and recruiters.
Assistant Director of Armstrong’s Leadership and Community Engagement, Rachel West, organizes several leadership programs here at Armstrong such as The Nick Mamalakis Emerging Leaders Program and Serve912.
The Nick Mamalakis Emerging Leaders Program is a leadership development program that includes mentorships and hands-on training for leadership careers. Serve912 offers weekly community service initiatives for Georgia Southern students to volunteer at local nonprofits.
“We’ll have our biggest kickoff on Aug. 29 for Treasure Savannah as the start to our community service,” West said. “We give free T-shirts, free lunch, and we provide all transportation.”
Treasure Savannah is Georgia Southern’s day of service, where students, staff and faculty give back to the community. To get involved with Treasure Savannah or other community engagement events, students are encouraged to stop by the Student Engagement Suite in Student Union Room 234 or to contact West at [email protected].
