Imagine walking around campus, on your way to class, when you happen to pass by students dancing to a hoppingly choreographed musical number. Perhaps in a parking lot, or on the steps of student union, or even at the tennis courts.
And they’re darn good at it, too.
Meet Odd.i Dance
The “Korean Pop (K-Pop) Dance Cover Club”, known as Odd.i Dance amongst members, is an Armstrong-based dance group dedicated to practicing and perfecting their choreographed routines, and connecting with the community through their love for the art form.
Founded in 2022 by President Addison Durrence, the dancers came from humble beginnings with only five starting members, just one member over the required number to be a student organization by the Office of Student Activities.
Since then, the group has grown to a team of fifteen members, who practice and post their dancing videos to social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
Dancers stress the importance of community and friendship with their participation in Odd.i Dance. Founding member Isabella Woods explains how the group helped her feel welcome in a new environment.
“It made it even better, of my college experience, to talk with others and know there’s other people out there that have the same interest as me,” Woods said.
Gracie Blyss, a member who grew up with a love for the culture of K-Pop explains, “I just really bonded with everybody and I love the dances that we do… I feel like we’re like a sorority, but you don’t have to pay to be in it.”
Odd.i Inspiration and Outreach
“[K-Pop] takes influence from Western culture, black culture, just many different sounds of music and they kind of make it into their own,” Addison Durrence explained.
She described how Korean groups such as Red Velvet, ATEEZ, and ONEUS, among others, have helped inspire the organization through their music and choreography.
Determined to share their passion for K-Pop with the entire Savannah Community, Odd.i Dance recently hosted a free dance event in Forsyth Park on April 11. Back in February, they performed outside of a Savannah Ghost Pirates event.
While their routines being worked on now are “classified”, Durrence reveals plans to extend into a new genre.
“We haven’t really done anything hip-hop related. We’ve done kind of bubble gum pop, traditional, darker tones, but we haven’t done anything sort of like hip-hop freestyle dances,” she said.
While no future events are planned as of yet, a remedy for eager fans can be found in dance videos, covers, and member introductions on the group’s social media.
Odd.i Dance boasts a YouTube (@Odd.i_dance), Instagram and TikTok (@odd.i_dance). The group is officially listed as the “Korean Pop (K-Pop) Dance Cover Club” on Eagle Engage. If interested in joining, or for further information, the group can be reached via email at [email protected].
