Eagles look sharp in season-opening win
September 5, 2016
The Eagles were able to easily pick apart the Tigers in a 54-0 route Saturday night in Paulson Stadium. The Eagles looked to be in midseason form, staying on point in almost all facets of the game.
Defense:
The defense looked forceful holding the Savannah State offense to only 140 yards of total offense and only eight first downs. The defenses spirited leader Ironhead Gallon led the team with six tackles. A key stat to take away from this performance is the third down conversion rate of SSU. The Tigers were only able to convert one out of nine third downs, while the Eagles converted eight of twelve.
“From a defensive standpoint, they played well. They played hard and they played physical. We’ll look and see what their execution was once we get an opportunity to look at the tape but obviously, any time you have a shutout, you’ve got to feel good about that,” Tyson Summers, head coach, said.
Offense:
Offensively, the Eagles looked completely unstoppable. Georgia Southern accumulated 605 yards of total offense with 420 of those yards coming from a dominant ground game. Matt Breida and Wesley Fields had one touchdown a piece on the ground, while both averaging nearly 6.8 yards per carry. One of the biggest bright spots for the Eagles was the contribution of Running Back Demarcus Godfrey, who saw a lot of playing time replacing L. A. Ramsby. Godfrey led the entire team running the ball collecting 124 yards on the ground.
“From an offensive standpoint there is a lot of total yards on their obviously and I certainly think that you were able to look up and see three backs tonight that played well and ran hard,” Summers said
At the end of the day Quarterback Favian Upshaw picked up right where he left off in the 2015 season. There were high expectations for the Godaddy bowl MVP. Coming off of a very impressive bowl performance, there was no glitch in Upshaw’s performance. Upshaw led the Eagles with a total of four touchdowns and gaining a total of 168 total yards.
Before the start of the 2016 season GS unveiled their new Godaddy bowl championship plaque over the Field of Dreams. The next game for GS is on the road at South Alabama on Sep. 10.
