On January 13, 2016, Frontier Communities announced the 15 semifinalists for the competition and Statesboro is included in those 15.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) explains that the competition started with 50 communities selected from 135 applicants for the three year long competition.

The next stage for the 15 semifinalists is to attend the America’s Best Communities Summit in April; there they will explain their plans and eight will be chosen to receive $100,000 to start their plan.

If Statesboro’s plan makes the largest impact they will win first prize and will receive $3 million. If they win second place it would be $2 million and third place is awarded $1 million.

According to AJC, the plan for Statesboro is called the “Blue Mile” which will connect Georgia Southern University to Downtown Statesboro.

The America’s Best Community is sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH, CoBank and the Weather Channel with the ultimate goal to bring life back into small towns and cities across America.
