Georgia Southern could not get much going on Saturday as they lost to West Virginia 12-4 to even the series.

West Virginia (3-2) scored in all but two innings, tacking on 14 hits and three homeruns.

It looked like it would be a good day for Georgia Southern (4-2) after the West Virginia pitcher hit senior RF Aaron Mizell, who would eventually score, in the first inning. However, West Virginia answered with a solo homerun during the next inning to tie it up 1-1.

The Mountaineers would end up scoring nine more runs over the next seven innings while Georgia Southern was only able to produce three making it 10-4.

West Virginia’s three-run home run in the seventh inning seemed to drain all of the life that the Eagles had left.

However, after that homerun senior DH Chase Griffin hit one over the fence himself in hopes of sparking a comeback. Unfortunately, that was the last run the Eagles scored and the Mountaineers had already pulled ahead enough to seal the 12-4 victory.

Redshirt freshman P Adam Kelly (0-1) got the start on the mound but after allowing two runs on two hits with one earned, head coach Rodney Hennon had no other option than to pull him. Six more pitchers went into the game but were not able to get into any sort of rhythm.

On the other hand, West Virginia only had to use two pitchers. Redshirt junior P Ross Vance (1-1) allowed three runs in the span of 6.1 innings and struck out nine while walking just one batter. Freshman P Conner Dotson came in to relieve Vance for the final 2.2 innings and was able to strike out seven batters.

Georgia Southern ended up recording 11 hits with Griffin going 3-5 on the day while senior SS Dalton Busby went 2-3 with two doubles.

Georgia Southern baseball will be back in action on Sunday. The game will begin at noon as the Eagles attempt to win the series against West Virginia.
