The women’s tennis team has yet to meet a competitive opponent as they now go 3-0 on the season. With a 5-2 victory over Mercer on Saturday, and a complete 7-0 sweep of Savannah College of Art & Design on Sunday, the Eagles will be sitting comfortable as they go into Florida for next week’s meets.

The only two team points the Eagles lost against Mercer were the one point from doubles and one from a singles match.

The team of junior Mary Phillips Smith and freshman Anne Kurzweil found a win against freshman Grace Korta and junior Roxy Bartz 6-1. But, the other two teams of junior Francisca Norregaard and sophomore Daria Vasekina, and senior Jordana Klein and sophomore Giula Riepe, could not copy as Mercer took the doubles team point.

In the No. 1 spot match, Klein took victory against freshman Xandra Fougner 6-4, 6-4. Smith followed in the No. 2 spot as she defeated Korta 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Kurzweil held up at No. 3 to win against Bartz 6-0, 7-5.

Riepe at No. 5 beat junior Liza Klyachkin 6-2, 6-3. Norregaard gave the Eagles their fifth team point in her No. 6 spot victory over freshman Laura Kelly 6-1, 6-3. Vasekina was the only Eagle unable to win her singles match with her loss against sophomore Haley Powell 6-2, 6-3.

SCAD gave the Eagles their first sweep of the season.

All across the board, the Eagles had success. Smith and Kurzweil won their doubles match against senior Maria Barragan and freshman Camille Gbaquidi 6-2. Norregaard and Vasekina were next as they took down senior Carolina Viteri and Mistecky 7-5. The last team of Klein and Riepe defeated sophomore Gianna Mitchell and junior Daniella Arcila 6-2 to give the Eagles their first team point.

Klein took a close tiebreaker win over Gbaquidi as she got the Eagles a team point in the No. 1 spot 5-7, 6-3, 10-5. Smith for the No. 2 match beat Barragan 6-3, 7-6, 9-7 to give the Eagles their second team point. Kurzweil, again for No. 3, took out Mistecky 6-4, 6-2. This was enough for the Eagles to claim their third team win on the season.

On the final stretch was Riepe in the No. 4 match. She defeated Viteri 6-1, 6-2. Vasekina was in the No. 5 spot as she won against freshman Karina Rovira 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. To close out the positional matches, Norregaard defeated Mitchell 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 match.

                  Stetson University and Florida Atlantic University will be the Eagles’ next opponents on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7. The meets will be in Florida and they will mark the women’s first away matches of the spring season.
