Men’s soccer goes 2-0 over weekend

The Men’s Soccer Team went 2-0 in the Marriott Springhill Suites Invitational this weekend with a win against Florida Atlantic University and the University of North Carolina Asheville. 

On Friday night, the Eagles’ match against the FAU was delayed nearly two hours due to inclimate weather in the area. Early on in the first half, FAU scored its first goal of the game in the 8th minute. Then, in the 21st minute, the Owls scored again.

Just before the end of the first half, the Eagles scored their first goal; freshman Landon Barrow made the score 2-1 prior to halftime.

In the 55th minute of the game, freshman Nick Wells tied the score. Then, in the 59th minute, senior Nick Ward put the eagles ahead by one goal. 5 minutes later, junior Emmanuel Raji scored to put the Eagles up by 2.

The Owls managed to tie the game once again by the 82nd minute, but in the 87th minute senior David Vargas Masis scored the winning goal, giving the Eagles a final score of 5-4 in the match.

On Sunday afternoon, the Eagles took on the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. In the 10th minute of the match, Raji scored a goal for the Eagles. The score at halftime was 1-0.

The second half of the game was delayed due to lightning detected in the area. When play resumed, Ga. Southern scored again; sophomore Jeremy Rector scored the Eagles’ second goal of the game in the 62nd minute. Junior Rocco Bagley scored again for the Eagles just minutes later. The Eagles won the game 3-0 against the Owls, going 2-0 in the tournament.

The Eagles will be traveling to Clinton, S.C., for their next game against Presbyterian College on Sept. 23. Their next home game will be against the Hartwick Hawks on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m..
